Explore various treatment options for managing acid reflux with Stretta, a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure.
Stretta is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure designed to treat acid reflux. During this procedure, a flexible endoscope is inserted through the mouth into the lower oesophagus. Using this device, controlled radiofrequency energy is delivered to the muscles of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES). The goal is to strengthen the LES by stimulating changes in the muscle tissue, which in turn may reduce the frequency and severity of acid reflux episodes.
The principle behind Stretta is that radiofrequency energy can alter the muscle fibers of the LES. This energy is intended to modulate the muscle, making it stronger and more resistant to the backflow of stomach acid into the oesophagus. The therapy aims to improve the barrier function of the LES by inducing hypertrophy (thickening) or reducing muscle relaxation, thereby decreasing reflux symptoms.
Radiofrequency energy can have various effects on muscle tissue, which include:
Muscle relaxation, which could worsen acid reflux symptoms.
Muscle spasm or temporary tightening, which might temporarily reduce reflux.
Muscle hypertrophy or thickening, which could potentially strengthen the LES.
However, clinical studies show that these effects are inconsistent and temporary. Importantly, no significant or lasting increase in LES pressure—a key factor in preventing reflux—has been demonstrated after Stretta treatment. This suggests that the procedure does not meaningfully improve the actual function of the LES muscle.
Even if the Stretta procedure were successful in strengthening the LES muscle, this alone would not necessarily prevent acid reflux. The LES mechanism depends on multiple components working together—at least four different factors contribute to its proper function. Correcting only one aspect of this complex system, such as the muscle strength, is unlikely to fully cure or control reflux disease. Therefore, while Stretta might provide some symptomatic relief, it should not be seen as a comprehensive or definitive treatment for acid reflux.
