Understanding of Gallstones

Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder, a small organ responsible for storing bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver. These stones can vary in size and composition, and they can cause discomfort and health complications if left untreated.

What are Causes of Gallstones

Several factors can contribute to the formation of gallstones, including:

  • Excessive cholesterol in the bile.
  • Imbalance of bile salts or bilirubin.
  • Slow emptying of the gallbladder.
  • Family history of gallstones.
  • Obesity and rapid weight loss.
  • A diet high in fat and cholesterol.

Symptoms of Gallstones

Gallstones may or may not cause noticeable symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Sudden and intense pain in the upper abdomen (biliary colic).
  • Pain that radiates to the back or right shoulder blade.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Bloating and gas.
  • Indigestion and heartburn.
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) in severe cases.

Complications of Gallstones

  • Acute cholecystitis, which is an acute inflammation of the gall bladder and can cause intense pain in the upper abdomen, associated with high temperature and feeling unwell.
  • Pancreatitis, which is an inflammation of the pancreas which can happen as a result of a stone or gravel from the gall bladder passing through the bile duct. This can be a life-threatening condition.
  • Jaundice, which is a yellow coloration of the skin and eye resulting from blockage of the bile duct when gall stone/s pass through.

The above complications can be serious and might require emergency intervention.

Diagnostic Methods

If you are experiencing symptoms of gallstones, our team can conduct various diagnostic tests to confirm the condition, such as:

  • Abdominal ultrasound: A non-invasive imaging test to visualize the gallbladder and detect the presence of gallstones.
  • Blood tests: To assess liver function and look for signs of infection or blockage.
  • HIDA scan: A nuclear medicine test to evaluate gallbladder function and bile flow.
  • MRCP: Magnetic resonance scan to assess if any of the gall stones has moved to the bile duct.

Available Treatments

The treatment for gallstones is mainly surgical removal of the gall bladder with the contained stones.

  1. Watchful waiting: Sometimes conservative treatment is recommended if the stones are completely asymptomatic and there is no increased risks of causing complications.
  2. Medications: to dissolve cholesterol-based gallstones are not usually recommended as they can dissolve stones to small fragments which can easily move to the bile duct and cause complications.
  3. Gallbladder Stone removal(Cholecystectomy): This is the mainstay treatment for treating gall stones either electively or as an emergency.
